A Hero's Cause

Manny (The Pacman) Pacquiao

After winning the Championship bout against Sugar Shane Mosley, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao went back to his homeland. At the church where he customarily go after a fight, he prayed and attended the mass. Later on, at the podium of that church, he declared that the Reproductive Health Bill is against the will of God. Like his punch and his personality, it was a plain, simple, but very strong statement; and it shows that no one indeed is indispensable. For Providence, finding no hope from a son of heroes, tapped a pound for pound king and a true spokesperson of the poor to fight for His cause.

Before his fight against Mosley, Pacquiao states in an interview, and more or less this is what he said, “My most difficult fight is not inside the boxing ring but in my fight against poverty in my country”. Clearly, the Champ is looking for a cause to champion, and it appears that he already found one. Poverty is but a symptom that there exist evil forces that caused a country to suffer or to remain poor, and he perceived that RH Bill is one of those forces.

This time it will be an uphill battle for the King of the Ring and the enemies are strong, invisible, huge, cunning, and pervertedly wise. It would have been better and easier for him to stay out of the war-zone and enjoy his millions and his fame. But he heeded the call and he chose to rise and face the challenge. 

Even at the start, the battle is very divisive, and Pacman and the faithfuls are greatly outnumbered. But knowing Pacquiao being a worshiper of an Almighty God, I certainly believed that he knew that there is truth where God is and there is victory where truth is. And sometime, winning is not in the outcome of the battle but in choosing the side to fight for.
